UMBARRA THE BLACK DUCK
This next story is about Umbarra the Black Duck, which is the totem of the Yuin nation.
Back in the old days, a man called Merriman had his totem called Umbarra the Black Duck. Umbarra, the totem, warned Merriman everywhere he went of the danger. How did he warn him of the danger? he fluttered dived down into the water and made splashes. When Merriman, the old man, saw that bird doing that, he knew that something dangerous was going to happen.
One day, all the tribe was eating fish. Suddenly, Merriman saw Umbarra diving in the water, splashing about, ruffling his feathers up and so Merriman knew there was some people coming.
He told all the men to get all the women and children away. He put them in the canoes and he sent them out to the island, Merriman’s Island. All the women and children, and the Elders, went out there.
All the warriors were around the lake waiting for the men coming. They were coming here to steal the women! The night came and those men finally arrived. They were sneaking up and, as they got nearer, the Black Duck warned the people. When they came and tried to go to the island where all the women and children were, all the warriors on there kept them off from invading that land and taking the women.
That’s why we’re still here today, because Umbarra the Black Duck saved them.
UMBARRA, EL PATO NEGRO
La siguiente historia es la de Umbarra, el pato negro, el cuál es el tótem de la nación Yuin.
En los tiempos antiguos, un hombre llamado Merriam tenía un tótem que se llamaba Umbarra, el pato negro. El tótem Umbarra advertía del peligro a Merriam allá donde éste fuera. ¿Y cómo le advertía del peligro? Se tiraba al agua y chapoteaba y salpicaba. Cuando Merriman, el viejo hombre, veía al pato hacer eso, sabía que algo peligroso iba a ocurrir.
Un día, toda la tribu estaba comiendo pescado. De repente, Merriam vió a Umbarra tirarse al agua, salpicando, sacudiendo las plumas y así Merriman supo que algunas personas se acercaban. Le pidió a todos los hombres de la tribu que se llevasen a las mujeres y niños. Los metió en canoas y los mandó lejos hacia la isla, la isla Merriman. Todas las mujeres y niños, y los ancianos, se fueron hacia allí mientras que los guerreros se colocaron alrededor del lago esperando a que esos hombres aparecieran. ¡Venían a llevarse a todas las mujeres!
La noche cayó y, finalmente, esos hombres llegaron. Se estaban acercando sigilosamente y, mientras que se acercaban, el Pato Negro advirtió a los hombres de la tribu.
Cuando llegaron e intentaron dirigirse a la isla donde todas las mujeres y niños estaban, todos los guerreros consiguieron que no lo hicieran.
Y así es como estamos aquí todavía, porque el Pato Negro Umbarra los salvó.
